What sets it apart
The minibus arrives at the square at around 1,000 metres, like all the others. The difference lies in who’s waiting for you there: a volcanological guide authorised by the park. On the edge of the Gran Cono, about 450 metres wide and around 300 metres deep, the difference between seeing a large grey hole and understanding what the fumaroles and the layers on the wall are is made by someone who explains it to you. This is the only serious reason to choose this tour over a simple transfer with a ticket.
The other thing worth noting is that parking, fuel and tolls are already included, and that the group is small. If what you need is time at the summit and not an explanation, the transfer from Pompei leaves about an hour and a half free at the crater in a total of three hours. If instead you want a guide all to yourself, or a volcanologist to accompany only your group, the right category is private tours and small groups.
