How we read them
The five-star ratings are almost all the same and say little. The two- and three-star ratings, however, resemble each other within the same product, and that’s the only way to see where a tour cuts corners. On a seven-hour tour, complaints are about time: forty minutes here, an hour and a half there. On a short tour, they’re about legs and the trail’s surface. When the same phrase appears in ten different reviews, it stops being an opinion and becomes a feature of the product.
The other thing we look at is how the operator handles things when something goes wrong, because here, things often do—through no fault of theirs. A review that describes a closed park and an alternative organised in half an hour is worth more to us than twenty glowing reviews of a sunny day.
Why the ratings here are lower
The six tours score between 3.7 and 4.3. These are numbers below the usual average for excursions in Campania, and it’s worth explaining where they come from, since almost none of these points concern the organizers.
The first reason is the weather. Wind, storms and snow close the Gran Cono trail with just a few hours’ notice, and the day is ruined no matter how well the tour was planned. What happens in that case is explained in when the park closes due to bad weather. The second reason is timing: tours that combine two sites leave less time at each, and those who only realise this on the way back write an angry review. The third reason is expectations about the climb. From the square to the crater’s edge, it’s twenty-five to thirty minutes on foot over lapilli, volcanic gravel that slips on the way down: how long the climb really takes is the page we recommend reading before booking, along with what to bring. The wrong shoes have ruined more days than the wind.
That said: a 3.7 is still a 3.7, and in one case the problem exists and lies with the product. You’ll find it written in the first line of the sunset-tour review.

Why do you give more weight to negative reviews?
